The boys are back in town!
Had such a great time on Sunday doing a pre record with Chris Pope. Chris is the singer/songwriter and guitarist in the band with Mic Stoner on Bass and Kenny Cooper on drums. They decided to do a stripped back set for my show and having seen them live many times it was so good to hear them like this. Too many times at venues the sound is pants and so you miss so much in way of dynamics and the subtleties of a song.I was slightly alarmed when Mic did actually strip off but it was to put on a nice new band t-shirt to promote their new single ” Mutiny on the Thames ” which is out today. Not sure why the trousers had to come off though ! I have a real soft spot for these guys and I really cannot enthuse enough about what a brilliant performer Chris is. He knows how to connect with the audience and delivers with such passion. He has a real spark off stage too that veers from fiery and volatile to warm and funny. I am sure when he was signed as a teenager with The chords he was a real heart breaker. He is very lucky to have found such great players in Mic and Ken. With Chris being such a live wire they really have to be on it to keep it tight and slick. There is incessant teasing and banter between the three of them which I very rarely see with bands. So many have players that are doing lots of different projects and just turn up clock on and clock off so it was really refreshing with these guys the genuine affection they have for each other.
After the interview we went to the pub and Spizz dropped by. Chris told a very funny story about Spizz and The chords staying in the same hotel in Amsterdam….. Doesn’t take much imagination to guess the chaos that ensued.
You can hear the guys on my show this Sunday 7th October 12pm. Check out their gigs coming up at http://www.popemusic.co.uk .
I am going to have them back on in November as an hour was not enough and I think its about time Spizz came back on. I shall get that sorted asap.
Just about to upload the Giles Robson Show on to Soundcloud so if you missed it give it a listen.Really interesting guy.
